Objectives
The availability and need to access vast amounts of heterogeneous multimedia information available in databases, Digital Libraries and on the Web requires the design and implementation of advanced information access systems. The building of these systems requires techniques that can understand better the needs of and interact with users in a more natural way. The aim of this course is to provide the students with knowledge of techniques and tool for the design, implementation and evaluation of such intelligent information access systems.


Contents
Fundamentals of text content analysis, natural language processing, and computational linquistics. Information extraction. Text and web mining. Clustering, categorisation and opinion mining. Question answering and summarisation. Information visualisation. Intelligent user interfaces.


Teaching mode
The course is taught as a series of lectures and interactive tutorials. There are two lectures per week with mandatory attendance. The assessment consists of a series of course assignments, a small course project and a final exam.
