Objectives
More and more information is becoming available in unstructured or poorly structured form. Examples of information of this type are free text, videos, images, sounds, blog, web pages, etc. The overall goal of the course is to enable the student to understand the fundamentals of information access to unstructured or poorly structured information. In particular, the aim is to assist the student to get an understanding of some of the techniques for the indexing, retrieval, filtering, organisation, and presentation of textual and multimedia information held in digital archives and on the web.

Contents
The course will cover the following topics: differences between structured and unstructured information; modalities of information access; information retrieval and information filtering; information classification and clustering; models and algorithms for the indexing and retrieval of text, speech, image and video; Web search engines; evaluation; social seach; information visualisation and navigation.

Teaching mode
The course is taught as a series of lectures and interactive tutorials. There are two lectures per week with mandatory attendance. The assessment consists of a series of course assignments, a small course project and a final exam.
