Maddalena Fiordelli accomplished her PhD study (March 2009) in the field of Health Communication with a thesis on a Public Health issue, which is smoking ban in Ticino. The aim of the thesis (titled "Argumentative Effects in the Public Discussion about the Smoking Ban") was the investigation of the discussion on the media about the application of a smoking ban law in the Italian part of Switzerland. The methodological soul of the thesis concerned the investigation of the most suitable mixed method, both qualitative and quantitative, to highlight the argumentation strategies of the actors in the debate. Particularly, she carried out a content analysis on seventeen Swiss newspapers within a timeframe of three years, analyzing more than 3000 articles. She is currently working for the Institute of Communication and Health at the Università della Svizzera italiana, where she graduated at the Faculty of Communication Sciences with a major in Technologies for Communication in December 2002.
