Section 1. The Mendrisio campus.
The USI campus in Mendrisio hosts the Academy of Architecture. Its two main buildings are Villa Argentina, a neo-classical palace surrounded by a century-old park, and Palazzo Turconi, originally the town hospital. Both have been completely remodeled to meet the needs of students, faculty and staff.
With the growth of the Academy, new buildings have been erected around the original structures. Completed in 2002, Palazzo Canavée houses classrooms, open spaces and student ateliers, faculty offices and the new cafeteria. At short distance from the Academy, the new and modern Students’ House provides accommodation to 72 students, in 18 spacious and nicely furnished apartments.
The campus extends also to the city centre, with the Foundation Archive of the Modern, housed in a building designed by renowned architect Mario Botta. The Archive, an independent research institute supporting the Academy of Architecture, acquires archive collections and iconographic documents of both historical and contemporary value, in the affirmation of "modernity".
The town of Mendrisio is known for the unique beauty of its historical centre and its magnificent pre-alpine surroundings; a lively city with a pleasant atmosphere, Mendrisio provides students with various recreational opportunities. Public transportation ensures fast connections to Lugano and Milan.
