Section 1. PhD Degrees at Università della Svizzera italiana.
The doctoral programmes at Università della Svizzera italiana (USI) contribute to broadening knowledge and research through high quality of teaching, excellence of content, and competitive scientific projects. Research aims at international recognition, but also responds to local or federal research mandates. Collaboration among scholars, researchers, and doctoral students of different disciplines and faculties enables a rich, vibrant, multi-disciplinary research environment.

Architecture.
<p>The Academy of Architecture - Università della Svizzera italiana - offers the possibility of completing doctoral studies leading to a degree of Doctor in Architecture (DrArch), Doctor of Technical Sciences (DrScTec) or Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). The studies are structured in the traditional form that requires an independent research under the supervision of a professor of the Academy. Economics.
<p>The doctoral programmes generally last a minimum of three years. Students are required to attend seminars in Advanced Microeconomics, Advanced Macroeconomics and Advanced Monetary Economics. The PhD thesis, written under the supervision of a faculty member, is meant to prove the candidate’s significant and ground-breaking contribution to knowledge in the chosen research field.</p>

Communication Sciences.
<p>The PhD programme in Communication Sciences is open to graduate students holding a Master degree in Communication Sciences or an equivalent degree in analogous disciplines. The programme includes advanced studies into the foundations of communication sciences, training in research methods, and individual research work under the supervision of a faculty member.</p>

Italian Language, Literature and Civilization.
<p>The PhD program is open to candidates holding a Master's degree either in Italian studies (language, literature and culture), or an equivalent academic degree.<br />The objective of the PhD program in Italian Language, Literature and Civilization, organized by the Istituto di studi italiani, at the University of Lugano, is to promote research in the areas that make up Italian studies (language, history and arts), and to to train new generations of researchers.<br />Whithin a three year period, the PhD candidate will write a doctoral thesis under the supervision of a Faculty member of the Istituto di Studi italiani, and will frequent a program of courses offered either by the Institute or by the Faculty of Communication Sciences.</p>

Informatics.
<p>The doctoral programme in Informatics forms professionals interested in academic or industrial research careers. The PhD programme is highly selective and gives students the opportunity to participate in national and international research projects. Working with one or more faculty members, the candidate will contribute with original, useful, and scientifically valid ideas in the chosen area of research.</p>
