Section 1. Entry requirements for the Master's programme.
Economics, Communication Informatics
The following are eligible to study in a Master’s programme in Economics, Communication Sciences, and Informatics:
- Bachelor’s graduates of the University of Lugano
Admission is unconditional in the same subject or special field, but extra course credits may be required for other disciplines. - Bachelor’s graduates from other universities
The appropriate Faculty reserves the right to indicate specific course deficits after an assessment of the candidate’s academic record. - Candidates with a four-year degree from USI or any other Swiss public University (Licenza, Lizenziat, Licence)
Graduates under the old system and regulations, with a compatible degree curriculum, may be awarded a Master’s degree of the University of Lugano by earning 60 study credits and possibly some supplementary course work. - Candidates with a postgraduate degree from other countries
Graduates with a compatible degree curriculum worth more than a Bachelor's, may ask for some transfer credits, if any of the subjects proposed in the curriculum of the Master applied for corresponds to subjects already taken. - Candidates holding a diploma awarded by a Swiss university of applied sciences (SUPSI, FHS, HES) in accordance with the agreement CRUS/KFH/COHEP or another university of applied sciences if considered equivalent
Students may be admitted to study at USI for a Master's degree in a compatible field of studies by obtaining an additional 60 study credits (at the most).
Architecture
The Academy of Architecture admits students who have graduated under the new European system of higher education as well as students who graduated under the previous regulations. Entrance requirements are as follows:
Students holding a Bachelor’s degree of the Academy of Architecture are unconditionally admitted to study in a Master’s degree there, according to the terms of the Study and Examinations Regulations of the Academy;
For candidates holding a Bachelor’s degree of another institution admission is subject to the acquisition of a certain number of supplementary credits and to available space and resources. The Mobility Committee assesses each case separately on the basis of the study curriculum of the Academy;
For students with a Bachelor’s degree from another university under the old system and Regulations, admission is subject to the acquisition of a certain number of supplementary credits and to available space and resources. The Mobility Committee assesses each case separately on the basis of the study curriculum of the Academy;
Candidates holding a diploma awarded by SUPSI or another university of applied sciences (FHS, HES) may be admitted to the Master’s degree programme, but are expected to acquire 30 supplementary study credits as defined by the Academy.
The Bologna system of university studies
The Bologna reform of university study system (a three-year curriculum followed by a two-year curriculum conferring the degree of Bachelor and of Master respectively) abolished the previous university degree framework. Hence, students are strongly advised to acquaint themselves with the details of the new rules and opportunities. The admission requirements for a Master’s programme adopted for students of the University of Lugano comply with the recommendation of the Rectors’ Conference of Swiss Universities (CRUS).
Basic principle
CRUS invites Swiss universities to guarantee at least one two-year Master’s programme for each existent three-year Bachelor’s programme, and recommends that students complement their first degree with a Master in the same special field. These Guidelines are in harmony with those of the Rectors’ Conference of Italian Universities.
Exception
The Bologna system allows students to select an alternative Master’s degree, thus to switch to a different academic profile.
Study credits
The Bologna Declaration prescribes that all taught courses and course work are quantified in ECTS points. The European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) guarantees that credits are wholly compatible and transferable within and across the European university system.
Holders of a Bachelor’s degree are accepted unconditionally in a Master’s programme in the same subject or special field. Admission to study in a different disciplinary field than one’s Bachelor’s degree may be subject to some supplementary (‘levelling up’) course assessment and the acquisition of extra credits.
N.B. Students who have, in another university or school in Switzerland or abroad, failed their examinations the limited number of times allowed by the Exams Regulations, shall not be admitted as students in the same Faculty or for the same course or field of studies.
