The Università della Svizzera italiana (USI) was established by public charter as an autonomous body independent of state control, and run according to principles of private enterprise. It was instituted by an Act of Parliament on 3 October 1995, and is subject to the following laws and regulations (including the University founding charter, its statute, admissions and matriculations, general employment conditions for academic staff, for administrative staff, etc.).

The laws and regulations are available only in Italian, with the exception of the procedures, policies and criteria for promotion and tenure.
