The Servier-SCT “Award for the Young Researcher in Medicinal Chemistry” 2016 goes to Prof. Vittorio Limongelli

At the 24th Young Research Fellow Meeting, held by the French Medicinal Chemistry Society in Châtenay-Malabry (Paris, France) on February 8-10, 2017, USI professor Vittorio Limongelli (Institute of Computational Science, Faculty of Informatics) received the Servier-SCT “Award for the Young Researcher in Medicinal Chemistry” 2016, for his research in the field of computational pharmacology. The prize of 2000 euros is sponsored by the Institut de Recherches Servier (IdRS) and is awarded every year, since 1985, to promote world-class research and also to support young researchers.

Professor Limongelli began his academic career with Master in Chemistry and Pharmaceutical Technology in 2004, followed by a Ph.D in 2007, both at the University of Naples "Federico II". During his graduate and post-graduate studies, which include visiting positions at the University of Bologna and ETH Zurich, his research was focused on standard computational methodologies (e.g. molecular docking, homology modeling) applied to the study of systems of biopharmaceutical interest. His post-doctoral work, at ETH Zurich, was conducted in the field of enhanced sampling simulations used to study rare events in biosystems with a special focus on molecular binding processes. In December 2010, he got a permanent position as Researcher at the University of Naples "Federico II" and in 2014, he obtained the qualification of Associate Professor in Italian universities. In 2015, he moved to Switzerland, where he was appointed Senior Assistant Professor at Università della Svizzera italiana, in Lugano), at the Institute of Computational Science, where he specializes in Computational Biology, in-silico Pharmacology and Drug Design. Prof. Limongelli was awarded, in 2013, the “Premio Scrocco” conferred by the Division of Theoretical and Computational Chemistry of the Italian Chemical Society for his original contribution to the study of biological phenomena by applying advanced computational methods.

The French Medicinal Chemistry Society (Société de Chimie Thérapeutique, S.C.T) is a non-profit organisation founded in 1966, whose missions are to promote knowledge in key areas of pharmaceutical research and development, particularly in the research and validation of biological targets of therapeutic interest, screening, design, optimization and selection of drug candidates, chemical biology, medicinal chemistry, pharmacokinetic, metabolism and toxicity.
