Il corso introduce ai fondamenti teorici e pratici della tutela e del restauro dei monumenti storici. Un primo modulo è dedicato alla storia, alle motivazioni e alle teorie della tutela e del restauro; presenta i concetti chiave della disciplina – monumento, patrimonio, inventario, autenticità, stratificazione, reversibilità – e ne ripercorre l’evoluzione. Un secondo modulo è incentrato sulle metodologie e i procedimenti del restauro dell’architettura storica in un contesto complesso come quello di Venezia. Verranno presentate le diverse fasi in cui si articola il progetto di restauro: le analisi preliminari, il rilievo del degrado dei materiali, la diagnostica, i tipi d’intervento, le scelte e la relazione tra intervento contemporaneo e sostanza storica. Nel terzo modulo una serie di casi studio illustra le diverse problematiche che pongono, sul piano teorico, metodologico e giuridico, la conservazione e il riuso dell’architettura del XX secolo.
The course provides an introduction to the theoretical and practical foundations of the conservation and restoration of historic monuments. The first module deals with the history, reasons and theories of conservation and restoration; it presents the subject’s key concepts – monument, heritage, inventory, authenticity, stratification, survival – and traces its evolution. A second module focuses on methods and procedures in the restoration of historic architecture in a complex environment like that of Venice. It will present the various phases of the restoration project: preliminary analysis, detection of decay in materials, diagnosis, types of intervention, choices and the relations between contemporary intervention and the historical substance. The third module presents case studies illustrating the various issues raised on the theoretical, methodological and legal planes by the conservation and reuse of twentieth-century architecture.
