Institute of Communication and Health, Ph.D student
I am an anthropologist graduated from Universidad de Antioquia in Medellin (Colombia), my home town. I specialized in Public Health Nutrition at Wageningen University in the Netherlands. For my master thesis I conducted a small research in a rural area in Kenya exploring factors that predict the intention of mothers to feed their children Amaranth grain. Furthermore, I did an internship with UNICEF at the Infant and Young Child Feeding Program (IYCF) in New York. There, I assisted the development of a monitoring and evaluation tool for the IYCF regional offices. I also conducted a study about complementary feeding practices in some Asian countries based on DHS data. Since February 2011 I have been a PhD student at the Institute of Communication and Health at the Università della Svizzera italiana in Lugano. I work on a project, funded by the Swiss National Foundation, that seeks to assess the influence of health literacy, empowerment and judgment skills on the self-management of asthma practices such as appropriateness of medication use, trigger avoidance, symptoms recognition and adequate response to those.
