È professore di Informatica e dirige il Distributed Systems Group e l´Information Systems Institute alla Technical University di Vienna. Le principali aree di interesse scientifico comprendono l´ingegneria del software, i linguaggi di programmazione, i sistemi distribuiti e paralleli. Ha ricoperto funzioni manageriali e tecnologiche presso gli Hewlett-Packard Laboratories, la Palo Alto, la Synapse Computer Corporation, la Ridge Computers e TRW Vidar. In ambito accademico, è stato assistant professor di Informatica alla University of North Carolina di Chapel Hill, adjunct professor al Georgia Institute of Technology, alla University of Santa Clara, e alla San José State University. È stato inoltre Fulbright scholar alla University of Helsinki (1979) e visiting professor al Politecnico di Milano (1988), ed è stato ricercatore in un progetto Esprit di Software Architectures for Embedded Systems. Attualmente svolge dei progetti di ricerca finanziati dall´Unione Europea sull´ingegneria del software per sistemi di e-commerce e di e-business. È co-autore di ´Programming Language Concepts´ e ´Fundamentals of Software Engineering´. È senior member dell´IEEE. In particolare è stato program chair di diverse conferenze, tra cui la ´Sixth European Software Engineering Conference´, il ´Fifth ACM SIGSOFT Symposium on the Foundations of Software Engineering´ (Zurigo, 1997) e la ´International Conference on Software Engineering´ (Limerick, Irlanda 2000). È attualmente chair dello steering committee della European Software Engineering Conference. Nella Facoltà è nominato professore ordinario ed è responsabile per il corso di Tecnologie del software.

Mehdi Jazayeri is professor of computer science and founding dean of the Faculty of Informatics at the University of Lugano. From 1994 through 2007, he was also professor of computer science and head of the Distributed Systems Group at the Technical University of Vienna. He has worked at both technical and management capacities at Hewlett-Packard Laboratories, Palo Alto, Synapse Computer Corporation, Ridge Computers, and TRW Vidar. From 1990 to 1992, he set up and managed a joint research project on parallel systems between Hewlett-Packard and the University of Pisa. He has been an assistant professor of computer science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, adjunct professor at Georgia Institute of Technology, University of Santa Clara, and San Jose State University. He was a Fulbright Scholar at the University of Helsinki (1979) and a visiting professor at the Politecnico di Milano (1988). Mehdi Jazayeri was named an IEEE Fellow in 2007. He holds degrees from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (SB, 1971) and Case Western Reserve University (MS, 1973; PhD, 1975).
