The Institute for Economic Research (IRE) conducts research in the field of regional economics and urban development, with a view to developing knowledge, economic teorie and models, as well a sto testing new analytical tools. A vital component of IRE´s activities consists in the training of researchers and the transfer of knowledge to students.
Specific themes of IRE´s research actually include regional and urban development, regional innovation and competitiveness, the trans-border labour market, trans-alpine freight transport and urban and tourist mobility, as well as the economics of tourism destinations. Traditionally, IRE has been a point of reference for applied research in Ticino, providing its services and support to public and private institutions and to business and industry as a whole. To do so, IRE has created the Centre for the Observation of Economic Dynamics (CODE) which monitors trends and structural dynamics of the Canton´s economy from and interregional perspective. CODE integrate observatories of the labor market, trans-Alpine transport and international tourism.
