USI more students

In the academic year 2019-20, the number of students grew by 156 reaching a total of 2971. 27% are enrolled in Architecture, 31% in Economics, 27% in Communication, 13% Informatics and 2% in Biomedicine. Competitive research is also growing, reaching 23 million CHF in 2019.

26% of the students enrolled come from Ticino, 7% from other cantons, 49% from Italy and 18% from other countries. The Academy of Architecture counts 809 students, the Faculty of Economics 911, the Faculty of Communication Sciences 791, the Faculty of Informatics 391 and the Faculty of Biomedical Sciences 69. Of the 2971 students enrolled at USI, 2613 are in primary education (1327 Bachelor students and 1286 Master students); there are 301 PhD students, and 57 students attend a continuing education programme (Master of Advanced Studies). 

Concerning competitive research funds, 2019 was a particularly profitable year for Università della Svizzera italiana. Competitive research includes all research financed from funds allocated on a competitive basis by the European Union, the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF), the Swiss Agency for the Promotion of Innovation - Innosuisse (formerly CTI), the Swiss Conference of Universities, competitive foundations and other bodies. The total allocated to USI in 2019 is around CHF 23 million, of which CHF 20.2 million is from the SNSF.
