At its meeting of 26 February 2020, the Federal Council adopted the Message on the new energy research programme SWEET (Swiss Energy Research for the Energy Transition) for the attention of Parliament. The programme will run for twelve years, from 2021 to 2032.

To this end, only consortium projects which are the subject of calls for tenders and which deal with research topics central to the Energy Strategy 2050 will be financed. With this project, the Federal Council intends to ensure an uninterrupted succession to the Swiss Competence Centers in Energy Research (SCCER), which had been supported between 2013 and the end of 2020 with the ERI Dispatch (Dispatch on the promotion of education, research and innovation).

The SWEET research programme aims to harness the skills and capabilities of the universities developed in the SCCERs for research topics of central importance to Switzerland's energy and climate strategy.
