USI progresses in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings by Subject

Following the leap forward recorded in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2021, USI has made significant progress in the subject area rankings as well, namely in Computer Science, where USI is now fourth in Switzerland and in the 126-150 bracket (top 15%) globally.

A record 1512 institutions are considered in the THE 2021 Subject Rankings across the 11 subject areas, with 522 newly ranked this year. USI is ranked in three of the eleven subject areas: Computer Science, Economics and Social Sciences, further confirming the progress made by the University in the THE rankings over the last two years (see Quicklinks).

USI has recorded the most marked progress in Computer Science, ranking fourth in Switzerland, just behind the two Federal Institutes of Technology in Zurich and Lausanne and the University of Zurich, while globally USI is in the 126-150 bracket out of a total of 827 universities. By comparison, in THE Subject Ranking 2020 for Computer Science, USI was fifth - together with the University of Basel - on a national level and in the 151-175 bracket on a global level (out of 750 institutions).

USI also scored well in the rankings of the other two subject areas mentioned. In Business and Economics, USI is sixth - together with the University of Bern - nationally, ahead of the University of Fribourg, and in the 201-250 bracket out of 729 universities globally (top 30%). In Social Sciences, USI is in the 301-400 bracket globally out of 791 institutions (top 40%).
