In order to help current students and recent graduates to find their way in the working world, many of our alumni shared their career story. Here the story of Tsenddorj Dorjpurev, Senior Economist for the Central Bank of Mongolia, Ulaanbaatar (Mongolia). USI Degree: Master in Finance, 2016.

How did you start your career?

I have earned my B.A in Economics from Marmara University, Turkey in 2010. That year I have participated in the written exam held by the Bank of Mongolia for the research economist position. Among around 70 candidates I have been chosen to be employed as an intern. After 6 months of work and passing an oral exam to defend my expertise research paper I have become a permanent employee.

Why did you choose a career at Central Bank of Mongolia?

The Bank of Mongolia, the central bank, is one of the best research institution in the country and diverse set of skills are required at work which is both challenging and motivating at the same time. It is a known fact that the best economist in Mongolia are employed at the central bank.

What is your current role/duties?

I am senior economist at Research and Statistics department at the Bank of Mongolia. I conduct and oversee research papers and complication of monetary statistics. At the meantime, I am working on automation of statistics compiling and document preparation systems. Currently I am studying monetary policy transmission in micro-level data and political economy of central bank.

In your opinion, what are the qualities necessary for a successful career at Central Bank of Mongolia?

At the central bank background in economics, finance and data science are required altogether. These can be translated into analytical thinking and problem solving.

What positive aspects and qualities meant most to you during the study programme you attended?

I have participated in the swissmobility program during my study. This has gave me an opportunity get exposed to different set of academic environment. At the USI, specifically in my department, I have experienced, first hand, how top-level researches are conducted.

What competences and/or skills acquired in your USI Study Program have been useful/are useful to your professional career?

I have gained enormous amount of perspective to approach the problems related to economics and finance, which helped me to achieve a great performance at work in my post graduation years.

What is your advice to USI students entering the job market?

If you have graduated from USI, especially Master in Finance, I am sure you will do fine.
