In terms of obtaining competitive research funds, 2020 was a particularly fruitful year for Università della Svizzera italiana. Competitive research is intended as research financed by funds allocated on a competitive basis with other universities by the European Union, the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF), the Swiss Innovation Agency - Innosuisse (formerly CTI), the Swiss University Conference, competitive foundations and other institutions. The total obtained by USI in 2020 is 26 million CHF, of which 18.8 million from the SNSF, 3.8 million CHF from the European Union, and 2.5 million CHF from Innosuisse, and 700,000 CHF from other institutions.

Both figures - student numbers and competitive research funding - are the highest in USI's history.
