The European Commission has granted the budget for the development of the European Tertiary Education Register (ETER), coordinated by Benedetto Lepori, professor at USI Faculty of Communication, Culture and Society and Rector's delegate for research analysis. The funding amounts to one and a half million euros for a period of three years.

ETER is the reference database of European Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) delivering degrees at the tertiary level. It combines statistical data on students, graduates, finance and staff collected by national statistical offices. It covers over 3000 institutions in Europe and contains data for the years 2011-2016 (to be extended to 2020 under the new contract). An essential resource for higher education research in Europe and European policy development, widely used by both researchers and public administrations.

The budget awarded by the European Commission will be implemented by a consortium coordinated by Università della Svizzera italiana, which will also include Joanneum research (Graz), Austrian Institute of Technology (Vienna), NIFU Nordic Innovation Studies (Oslo), Università La Sapienza (Rome), together with a network of national experts and a close collaboration with EUROSTAT, OECD and national statistics offices.

The total volume of funding is 1.5 million euros for a period of 3 years, of which about 400'000 will be allocated to USI.

For Benedetto Lepori, project coordinator, "the new grant consolidates USI's leadership role in the field of higher education research, as the core of a large international research network".
