The European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO) has appointed Prof. Petr Cejka, group leader at the Institute for Research in Biomedicine (IRB, affiliated to USI), as one of its new members. This is the third time that a researcher active in the Italian-speaking part of Switzerland has been appointed by the prestigious European organisation.

The appointment of Prof. Cejka to the EMBO - which comes shortly after he was awarded a prestigious ERC Advanced Grant - adds to the previous appointments of researchers active in Ticino: in 2011, Prof. Federica Sallusto, group leader at the IRB; and in 2016, Prof. Andrea Alimonti, group leader at the Institute of Oncology Research (IOR, affiliated to USI).

"I consider this appointment as a sign of recognition, which will increase the visibility of my laboratory. I would like to thank the junior members of my research team, as without them such an achievement would not have been possible. As an EMBO member, moreover, I look very much forward to support junior researchers", says Cejka, who at the IRB investigates DNA repair mechanisms in human cells, in particular so-called 'homologous recombination'. His most recent findings have been published in the prestigious journal Nature

EMBO is an organisation of more than 1,800 leading researchers that promotes excellence in the life sciences in Europe and beyond. Founded in 1964, the organisation strives to support talented researchers at all stages of their careers, stimulate the exchange of scientific information, and help build a research environment where scientists can achieve their best work. EMBO helps young scientists to advance their research, promote their international reputations and ensure their mobility. Courses, workshops, conferences and scientific journals disseminate the latest research and offer training in techniques to maintain high standards of excellence in research practice.
