The lecture series dedicated to "Culture and Health", the course of USI Faculty of Biomedical Sciences, open to the public and carried out in collaboration with the City of Lugano Arts Department and IBSA Foundation for Scientific Research, continues. The second lecture will be held on Monday, 25 October 2021 (in Italian). Lecture content

Architecture can positively or negatively affect the quality of life and, therefore, health. Several studies address this relationship. Salutogenic design is based on a greater awareness of the impact of the surrounding environment on human health and well-being. The lecture aims to present and discuss how and which elements - such as the link between access to natural light and blood pressure, between overcrowding or chronic noise and psychological stress - can be better addressed in the design and thus in the realisation of a building in which human beings live, work, heal, learn or play.

Alan Dilani

A senior researcher on the interdisciplinary interaction between design and health. He developed and implemented the theory of the Salutogenic Design approach at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, which has been successfully adapted to design and public health projects around the world with a positive impact on human health and well-being. Alan Dilani is a founder of the International Academy for Design and Health (IADH) and World Health Design magazine. www.dilani.org

Mario Botta

Swiss architect and sculptor among the most respected in the world. Professor at the Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne, in 1996, he was among the founders of the Academy of Architecture in Mendrisio, where he served as director. In 2005, he founded the Teatro dell'Architettura, which, with its new premises, has been hosting major exhibitions and cultural events since 2018. www.botta.ch

Pietro Majno-Hurst

He trained in surgery in the United Kingdom (1987-1992). He is a Professor at USI Faculty of Biomedical Sciences and Head of Department and Chief of Surgery at EOC Lugano. Since 2012, he has directed the Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Complex Medicine programme.
