Exactly one month ago, the third edition of the Climathon Mendrisiotto was held. It involved forty participants from different age groups and backgrounds who, after only 24 hours of ideation work, presented eight innovative projects aimed at promoting the circular economy and zero waste philosophy.

"Climathon Mendrisiotto Region" took place from October 29th to October 30th, together with about 150 Climathons organized worldwide. This year the event broadened its horizons, involving not only the city of Mendrisio but the entire Mendrisiotto region thanks to the participation of thirteen municipalities that have joined the initiative with enthusiasm, confirming its success. "Also this year Climathon was a success, demonstrating how sensitive the population is to protecting our planet and supporting innovation," says Gabriele Martinenghi of the City of Mendrisio. "We hope that the ideas born from the Climathon contribute to triggering virtuous circles of territorial development (social and economic) in a sustainable and inclusive perspective".

Participants formed eight teams to work on the challenges focused on reducing waste and promoting the circular economy. Each team then developed its project with the support from coaches and experts to finally present it in front of a jury made up of representatives of the institutions (Mendrisiotto municipalities, City of Mendrisio, Canton Ticino), experts in circular economy (ACSI, WWF, Impact Hub Ticino), and innovation experts (Fondazione AGIRE, cenpro).

The first prize, consisting of 4,500 Swiss francs and direct access to the pre-incubation at the USI Startup Center, went to the project called Ultima Ratio, a digital platform connecting citizens who need to repair their electronic devices with local companies or shopkeepers able to do so, and making the population aware of recycling and reuse best practices. The second prize of 2,500 francs and membership at the Impact Hub Ticino, went to The Composts. This team ideated an educational program for schools that fosters an understanding of the circular economy and sustainability principles through video content for children. "We are very satisfied with the success of the third edition of the Mendrisiotto Region Climathon", concludes Gabriele Martineghi. "A big thank you to the participants and to all the people who worked with us to organise and finance this Climathon".
