Rahel Schmidt, a student in the Faculty of Biomedical Sciences at USI, has been awarded a Werner Siemens scholarship, for the year 2022/2023, from the Swiss Student Foundation, aimed at promoting students who excel in MINT subjects, namely mathematics, informatics, natural science and technology.

Second-year student at USI Master in Medicine, Rahel Schmidt, presented beside various other personal projects a master's thesis on "Humoral Immune response to SARS-CoV-2." A topic she researched at the Institute for Research in Biomedicine (IRB) in Bellinzona. Her dedication earned her recognition amounting to about CHF 20,000. For her PhD MD thesis, Rahel will work in the field of breast cancer research at one of Lugano's hospitals (FYI: Ospedale Regionale di Lugano, supervised by MD PhD Gasparri at the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics (Prof. Papadia)).

A total of nine students have been awarded a Werner Siemens Scholarship already being supported by the Swiss Studies Foundation.

The grants are called Excellence Scholarships and are intended for students who boast excellent academic performance and are committed to promoting and disseminating MINT subjects in society. In addition to financial support, students receive the opportunity to participate in networking events.
