Erasmus Student Network (ESN) is the largest student association in Europe providing opportunities for self-development under the principle of “Students Helping Students”.

Milestones

  • In 1987 the European Community confirmed the Erasmus programme
  • In 1989 the Erasmus Bureau invited 32 former Erasmus Students for an evaluation meeting in Gent, Belgium. This meeting was a starting point for Erasmus Student Network.
  • On 16 October 1989, the first section using the name Erasmus Student Network was founded in Utrecht, The Netherlands. Following that, ESN sections were founded in various European universities, and with financial support from the European Community.
  • By 1994 ESN already had 60 sections in 14 countries, growing year by year.

To date, ESN network consists of 280 sections in 32 European countries as well as in Azerbaijan. New technology has tremendously improved collaboration between sections and frequent meetings strengthen the ties between ESN members as well as serve the possibility to exchange ideas and work together for a better future.

ESN Switzerland is one of the 40 countries of the ESN. 16 sections spread across the country represent all 4 national languages. Each section counts between 5 and 60 active members, who help the incoming students and take care of them during their exchange.

Among their great variety of activities, the association helps new students from different countries settle in, by showing the region and organizing events. Following the motto "students helping students", ESN works to develop the conditions for present and future exchange students and to promote the exchange experience.
