In order to help current students and recent graduates to find their way in the working world, many of our alumni shared their career story. Here the story of Lyubomir Vankov, Director Client Delivery Operations for 10EQS Knowledge Exchange in Sofia (Bulgaria). USI Degree: Master in Banking and Finance, 2013.

How did you start your career?

2012-2013 Internship as part of USI program. Initially for 3 months, then extended twice. Offered a full-time (remote) position, until Swiss documents were ready. Worked remotely from Bulgaria for a few years, while growing in seniority. Opened a local company office. Closed now due to covid.

Why did you choose a career in 10EQS Knowledge Exchange?

I was aiming at Corporate Finance or Investment Banking. Did 2 internship one after the other - (1) at the UN in Geneva (due to my BA background in Int. Relations and Political Science), which had an aspect in finance too, and (2) at me current company. Management Consulting turned out to offer a good glimpse into Banking and Fin, Service in addition to literally all other sectors and functions across the industry board. I liked it and decided to maintain the course.

What is your current role/duties?

Leading European delivery operations for a management consulting highly innovative firm, as well as local office team management and global delivery operations best practices. Part of the corporate strategy team.

In your opinion, what are the qualities necessary for a successful career in 10EQS Knowledge Exchange?

Priority of skills changes over time, but at an all-time high, I will pick people skills. In every industry, every sector, every functions, it is always about people. Very few career paths are linked to technical/non-human related work and I think few of my USI colleagues were after those. Ambition, fundamentals of mathematics/marketing/communications - those come in handy at all times.

What positive aspects and qualities meant most to you during the study programme you attended?

All courses were great, valuable and useful for setting a base of knowledge. The real world is much more different, no room for debate
there.

What competences and/or skills acquired in your USI Study Program have been useful/are useful to your professional career?

I see my time at USI as a holistic experience and an insightful journey, where the most useful experience has been outside of the class room. Courses and material was interesting and helpful, but the interaction, relationship and atmosphere/emotions I went through have been unique.

What is your advice to USI students entering the job market?

If you now what you want, great, chase it. But try to be open-minded. There is so much spillover of talent, functions and knowledge across the industry board, that you may miss to identify or take advantage of the opportunity of your lifetime.
