Abstract:
New virtual reality headsets rely on foveated rendering techniques that lower the rendering quality for peripheral vision to increase performance without a perceptible quality loss. While the concept is simple, the practical realization of the foveated rendering systems and their full exploitation are still challenging. Existing techniques focus on modulating the spatial resolution of rendering or shading rate according to the characteristics of human perception. However, most rendering systems also have a significant cost related to geometry processing. In this work, we investigate the problem of mesh simplification, also known as the level of detail problem, for foveated rendering. We first consider a simpler problem of object silhouettes and propose a foveated silhouette difference metric calibrated using data from perceptual experiments. Based on the metric, we propose a computational model that predicts a suitable level of detail for rendering an object at a specific eccentricity without objectionable quality loss. We apply the model to foveated rendering in virtual headsets and demonstrate the benefits in validation experiments. 

Biography:
Luca Surace is a PhD student in the Perception, Display and Fabrication Group led by Prof. Piotr Didyk. He is working in computer graphics and particularly on foveated rendering. He studied computer science at the University of Calabria and worked on his master’s thesis at the University of Plymouth.
