Innovations in SNSF Ambizione grants

The SNSF Ambizione scheme has been redesigned and will be open also to young researchers with non-professorial research positions offering career prospects.

From the next deadline, on 13 January 2017, the following provisions apply:

Applicants:

  • Researchers holding a doctorate with at least 12 months of research activities at a different higher education institution than the one where they obtained the doctorate.
  • Researchers may submit an application no later than 4 years after completing their doctorate.
  • Applicants must hold or have been promised a non-professorial teaching position with prospects of an academic career.

Duration: Grants are awarded for a maximum of 4 years and a minimum of 2 years.

Budget:

  • Ambizione grant with salary: the grant comprises the salary of applicant (average 105'000 CHF/Year) and project costs (max. 400'000 CHF/4years).
    PhD Students and Postdocs may be employed on this project. If a postdoc is envisaged, the host institution must contribute to at least half of the postdoc's salary.
  • Ambizione project grant: the grant covers the project costs (max. 400'000 CHF/4years), while the salary of applicant is funded by the host institution.

Host institution: a written confirmation from the host institution is mandatory. The SNSF provides a text template, please contact the Research Service USI-SUPSI.

Complementarity with other grants:

  • Permitted parallel applications: PRIMA, Advanced Posdoc.Mobility return grant.
  • Further grants: Ambizione holders may apply for SNSF professorships 18 months after starting the Ambizione grant at the earliest.

Repeated submissions: After a rejection, the Ambizione candidate can apply for Ambizione only once.

Requested documents:

  • Confirmation letter by host institution (see template)
  • CV and major scientific achievements (2 pages + 1 page; following the given structure)
  • Research output list (following the given structure)
  • Research plan (max. 15 pages - 60'000 characters excluded the bibliography).
