Prestigious international award to Prof. Franco Cavalli

The American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) will present the prestigious "Award for Lifetime Achievement" to Prof. Franco Cavalli during the opening ceremony of their annual meeting on Sunday, 7 April 2024. The ceremony will take place at the Convention Center in San Diego, California. "The scientific community in Ticino should be proud of Prof. Franco Cavalli for receiving such a prestigious honour. Few individuals in Switzerland have been recognised for their scientific achievements at this level," stresses the Dean of USI Faculty of Biomedical Sciences, Prof. Giovanni Pedrazzini.

The American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) is the most prominent organisation for cancer research, with over 60,000 members. Their annual meeting, which has 20-30,000 attendees, is considered the most important scientific event for cancer researchers.

This year, the AACR decided to honour Prof. Franco Cavalli, currently President of the Foundation for the Institute of Oncology Research (IOR) and of the Bellinzona Institutes of Sciences (BIOS+) Association, with the "Award for Lifetime Achievement". This award will be presented to him during the official opening ceremony of the annual meeting, which will take place at the Convention Center in San Diego on the morning of 7 April this year. During the ceremony, Prof. Cavalli will be given a few minutes to accept the award and express his gratitude to those who bestowed it upon him.

During one of the afternoon sessions, the distinguished oncologist has been asked to give a 45-minute keynote lecture. In this lecture, he will summarise the achievements of his professional life and his research in oncology. Additionally, he will outline his vision for shaping the future of cancer research. He will also address how the international scientific and political community should tackle the challenge of cancer on a global level. This is especially important since, in a few years, cancer is expected to overtake cardiovascular diseases as the leading cause of death worldwide. 

The AACR has recently published an extensive press release about the recognition awarded to Prof. Cavalli. The Association has summarised his scientific achievements, which range from clinical studies demonstrating the effectiveness of innovative new cancer drugs to his multifaceted research in malignant lymphomas. The latter led to the development of the "Lugano classification," which is now used worldwide to assess the objective condition of such patients.

The release, of course, mentions the International Conference on Malignant Lymphomas in Lugano, which he organised for the first time in 1981 and is now recognised in the field as a global leading event. The statement also highlights the founding of the International Extranodal Lymphoma Study Group (IELSG), the only cooperative clinical study group globally that focuses on extranodal lymphomas, which make up almost half of all cases of this disease. The IELSG coordinates more than 300 institutions across five continents and has redefined standard therapy in most of these lymphomas during its 25 years of existence. The AACR statement then goes on to highlight the creation, practically from scratch, of both IOSI (Oncology Institute of Southern Switzerland), which is also recognised in the United States as a so-called Comprehensive Cancer Centre, and the IOR (Institute of Oncology Research in Bellinzona, now affiliated to USI). 

It is also worth mentioning Cavalli's collaboration with the European School of Oncology (ESO) to create the WOF (World Oncology Forum) in 2012. The forum meets regularly in Ticino or Milan to analyse the global fight against cancer. The last meeting took place in Monte Verità in Ascona in September. The WOF has provided recommendations on urgent measures that the international community should take to combat the spread of cancer, particularly in developing nations. These recommendations have been widely adopted by organisations such as the World Health Organization (WHO).

The AACR also mentions the more than 600 scientific articles published by Cavalli, the four textbooks he has written, and the 20 national and international prizes and awards he has received to date, including, in particular, the lifetime achievement awards granted by the European Society of Medical Oncology and the Chinese American Hematologist and Oncologist Network, as well as the three Honorary Professorships he has been awarded in China and Central America.

In conclusion, he is given special recognition for his medical and humanitarian initiatives, particularly in Central America, where he established AMCA (Association for Medical Aid to Central America). His initiatives in paediatric oncology have been recognised by the World Health Organization (WHO), which has launched a worldwide campaign based on his model to combat the escalating issue of paediatric cancer.

Prestigieuse reconnaissance internationale pour le professeur Franco Cavalli

L’American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) a décidé d’attribuer au professeur Franco Cavalli son prix « Award for Lifetime Achievement », un prestigieux prix à la carrière. Cette reconnaissance éminente lui sera remise lors de la cérémonie d’ouverture du congrès annuel de l’AACR, qui se tiendra le dimanche 7 avril 2024 au Convention Center de San Diego, en Californie. « Tout le Tessin de la recherche et de la médecine doit être particulièrement fier de cette reconnaissance extrêmement importante obtenue par le professeur Franco Cavalli : peu en Suisse ont reçu des distinctions scientifiques de cette valeur » – souligne le Doyen de la Faculté des Sciences biomédicales de l’USI le professeur Giovanni Pedrazzini.

L’American Association for Cancer Research (AACR), avec ses 60 000 membres, représente la plus grande organisation de recherche sur le cancer à l’échelle mondiale. Le congrès annuel de l’AACR, auquel participent habituellement 20-30 000 chercheurs, est unanimement reconnu comme l’événement scientifique le plus important pour tous les acteurs de la recherche sur le cancer.

Cette année, l’AACR a voulu honorer avec l’« Award for Lifetime Achievement » (prix à la carrière) le professeur Franco Cavalli, actuellement président de la fondation pour l’institut de recherche en oncologie (IOR) et de l’association Bellinzona Institutes of Sciences (BIOS+). Cette reconnaissance lui sera remise lors de la cérémonie officielle d’ouverture du congrès annuel, qui aura lieu cette année au Convention Center de San Diego le 7 avril matin. Au cours de l’une des séances de l’après-midi, à titre de distinction spéciale, il a ensuite été invité à donner un cours magistral de 45 minutes, durant lequel, en plus de résumer les résultats de sa carrière et de ses recherches en oncologie, il pourra illustrer sa vision sur la façon de structurer l’avenir de la recherche sur le cancer. Il lui a également été demandé d’aborder la question portant sur la manière dont la communauté scientifique et politique internationale devrait relever le défi du cancer au niveau mondial, étant donné que cette maladie devrait, dans quelques années, dépasser définitivement les maladies cardiovasculaires pour devenir la première cause de décès dans le monde.

Dans le long communiqué publié récemment par l’AACR pour informer les médias américains et internationaux sur la remise de cette reconnaissance au professeur Cavalli, l’association résume ses réalisations scientifiques, depuis les études cliniques avec lesquelles il a su démontrer l’utilité d’une série de nouveaux médicaments innovants dans la thérapie médicamenteuse des tumeurs, jusqu’à ses recherches multiformes dans le secteur des lymphomes malins, qui ont entre autres eu pour résultat le fait que, chaque jour dans le monde, l’on utilise ladite « classification de Lugano » pour évaluer la situation objective de ces patients. Dans le communiqué, on cite bien entendu la Conférence internationale sur les lymphomes malins de Lugano, organisée par Franco Cavalli la première fois en 1981 et, aujourd’hui, le premier événement mondial dans ce secteur, et on souligne la création de sa part de l’International Extranodal Lymphoma Study Group (IELSG), le seul groupe d’études cliniques coopératives au niveau mondial sur lesdits lymphomes extra-nodaux, qui représentent près de la moitié des cas de cette maladie. Aujourd’hui, l’IELSG coordonne plus de 300 institutions sur les cinq continents, et en 25 ans d’existence, il a redéfini la thérapie standard dans la plupart de ces lymphomes. Le communiqué de l’AACR met également en lumière la création, pratiquement à partir de zéro, aussi bien de l’IOSI (Institut Oncologique de la Suisse Italienne), reconnu également aux États-Unis comme un « Comprehensive Cancer Center », que de l’IOR (Institut de recherche en oncologie de Bellinzone, aujourd’hui affilié à l’USI). Il souligne aussi la création par Franco Cavalli, en collaboration avec l’École européenne d’oncologie (ESO), du WOF (World Oncology Forum) qui, depuis 2012, se réunit régulièrement au Tessin ou à Milan (la dernière fois au Monte Verità d’Ascona en septembre dernier) afin d’évaluer l’état de la lutte mondiale contre le cancer. Le WOF a régulièrement fourni des indications sur les mesures urgentes que la communauté internationale devrait prendre pour faire face à cette épidémie – qui se propage surtout dans les pays pauvres –, des indications qui ont été ensuite largement reprises par exemple par l’OMS (l’Organisation Mondiale de la Santé).

L’AACR cite encore les plus de 600 articles scientifiques publiés par Franco Cavalli, les quatre ouvrages qu’il a écrits ainsi que les 20 reconnaissances et prix nationaux et internationaux qu’il a jusqu’ici déjà reçus. Il s’agit notamment des prix à la carrière reconnus par la Société européenne d’oncologie médicale et par l’Association des oncologues chinois, résidant aux États-Unis, ainsi que des trois titres de professeurs honoraires qu’il s’est vu remettre en Chine et en Amérique centrale.

En conclusion, il est particulièrement reconnu pour ses initiatives médicales et humanitaires, notamment en Amérique centrale avec la création de l’AMCA (Association pour l’aide médicale en Amérique centrale) ; des initiatives qui, dans le domaine de l’oncologie pédiatrique, ont récemment été utilisées par l’OMS pour lancer sur ce modèle une campagne mondiale visant à s’attaquer au problème croissant du cancer chez les enfants.

Die American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) hat entschieden, Prof. Franco Cavallis Karriere zu ehren und ihm den renommierten Preis „Award for Lifetime Achievement“ zu verleihen. Diese sehr bedeutende Auszeichnung wird ihm im Rahmen der Eröffnungszeremonie des jährlichen Kongresses der AACR am Sonntag, den 7. April 2024, in dem Convention Center von San Diego, Kalifornien, übergeben. „Forschung und Medizin des Kantons Tessin sollen stolz auf die Auszeichnung von Prof. Franco Cavalli sein: Wenige haben in der Schweiz einen solch prestigeträchtigen Wissenschaftspreis erhalten“, betont Prof. Giovanni Pedrazzini, Dekan der biomedizinischen Fakultät der USI.

Mit ihren mehr als 60.000 Mitgliedern ist die American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) die grösste weltweite Organisation in dem Bereich Krebsforschung. Der jährliche Kongress der AACR, an dem üblicherweise 20-30 Tausend Forscher teilnehmen, gilt zweifellos als das grösste wissenschaftliche Event für all jene, die sich mit Krebsforschung auseinandersetzen.

Dieses Jahr möchte die AACR mit dem “Award for Lifetime Achievement” (Auszeichnung für das Lebenswerk) den derzeitigen Präsident der Stiftung des „Istituto Oncologico di Ricerca“ (IOR) und des Verbands „Bellinzona Institutes of Sciences“ (BIOS+) Prof. Franco Cavalli ehren. Der Preis wird ihm im Zuge der offiziellen Eröffnungszeremonie des jährlichen Kongresses verliehen, der im Convention Center von San Diego am Vormittag des 7. April dieses Jahres stattfindet. Während der Zeremonie wird Prof. Cavalli die Gelegenheit haben, den Preis entgegenzunehmen und der AACR dafür zu danken.

Als besonderes Zeichen der Anerkennung wurde er gebeten, am Nachmittag einen 45-minütigen ausserordentlichen Vortrag zu halten und die Ergebnisse seiner Karriere sowie seiner Forschungen in der Onkologie zusammenzufassen und seine Vision über die Zukunft der Krebsforschung zu erörtern. Ausserdem bat man ihn, auf das Thema einzugehen, wie wissenschaftliche Welt und internationale Politik sich der weltweiten Herausforderung des Krebses stellen sollten, da diese Erkrankung voraussichtlich in wenigen Jahren den Herz-Kreislauf-Erkrankungen überwiegen und die häufigste Todesursache auf der Welt sein wird.

In der kürzlich veröffentlichten umfangreichen Bekanntmachung der AACR, in der sie die amerikanischen und internationalen Medien über die Preisverleihung an Prof. Cavalli informierte, fasst die Organisation seine wissenschaftlichen Errungenschaften zusammen: von klinischen Studien, bei denen er den Nutzen einer Reihe neuer, innovativer Medikamente in der medikamentöser Therapie von Tumoren aufzeigte, bis hin zu den vielfältigen Forschungen im Bereich Maligne Lymphome, welche unter anderem dazu führten, dass man heute weltweit die sog. Lugano-Klassifikation benutzt, um den objektiven Zustand dieser Patienten zu beurteilen. In der Bekanntmachung zitieren sie selbstverständlich die „International Conference on Malignant Lymphomas“ in Lugano, die Cavalli im Jahr 1981 ins Leben rief und heute das wichtigste Event weltweit in diesem Bereich ist. Ausserdem wird darauf eingegangen, dass er die “International Extranodal Lymphoma Study Group” (IELSG) gründete, die weltweit einzige Vereinigung für klinische Studien über sog. extranodale Lymphome, die fast die Hälfte der Erkrankungsfälle ausmachen. Die IELSG koordiniert heute mehr als 300 Institute auf fünf Kontinenten und hat in den 25 Jahren ihres Bestehens die Standardtherapie in Grossteil dieser Lymphome neu definiert. Die Bekanntmachung der AACR verweist des Weiteren insbesondere auf die Gründung – von nahezu Null auf – der Institute IOSI (“Istituto Oncologico della Svizzera Italiana”), das auch in den Vereinigten Staaten als sog. “Comprehensive Cancer Center” anerkannt ist, sowie des IOR (“Istituto Oncologico di Ricerca di Bellinzona”, heutiger Partner der USI). Cavalli gründete ausserdem in Zusammenarbeit mit der “European School of Oncology” (ESO) das World Oncology Forum (WOF), das seit 2012 regelmässig in Tessin oder in Mailand (letztes Mal im vergangenen September auf dem Monte Verità in Ascona) stattfindet, um die Lage des weltweiten Kampfes gegen Krebs zu beurteilen. Das WOF zeigt regelmässig Wege auf, welche Massnahmen die internationale Gemeinschaft ergreifen sollte, um dieser Epidemie, die sich vor allem in armen Ländern ausbreitet, entgegenzuwirken, und die dann grösstenteils eingeschlagen werden, beispielsweise von der WHO (Weltgesundheitsorganisation).

Die AACR zählt ebenso die mehr als 600 wissenschaftlichen Artikel von Cavalli, seine vier Bücher sowie die 20 Preise und nationale bzw. internationale Auszeichnungen, die er bis heute erhalten hat, auf, darunter insbesondere die Auszeichnungen für sein Lebenswerk durch die Europäische Gesellschaft für Medizinische Onkologie und die Chinese Society of Clinical Oncology, beide Sitz in den Vereinigten Staaten, und nicht zuletzt die drei Ehrenprofessuren, die ihm in China und Mittelamerika vergeben wurden.

Abschliessend wird ihm eine besondere Auszeichnung für seine medizinischen und humanitären Initiativen vergeben, vor allem für die Gründung der AMCA (“Associazione per l'aiuto medico al Centro America”) in Mittelamerika – Initiativen, die im Bereich pädiatrische Onkologie kürzlich von der WHO umgesetzt wurden, um auf der Grundlage dieses Modells eine weltweite Kampagne zur Bewältigung der zunehmenden Krebsfälle im Kindesalter zu starten.
