SPSS and Statistics Refresher

Lecturer: Eugène Horber.

Preliminary workshop: 13 - 14 August 2021.

It is free of charge for participants attending a regular workshop; it can be booked by itself for a fee (200CHF).

Workshop contents and objectives

The aim of this 2-day workshop is to acquire, deepen or brush-up skills with SPSS and statistics or learn to use SPSS, if you are familiar with other statistical packages.

You should attend this workshop if you have no or not much skills with basic statistics and statistical packages, especially if you attend another workshop during the Summer School that requires skills with statistics and software.

Topics covered

  • Working with SPSS (windows, menus, command language, output management)
  • Data entry and data documentation; preparing data for analysis (data transformations, scale construction and data management)
  • Descriptive statistics (categorical and continuous variables)
  • Analysis of relationships (crosstabulation, tables of means, regression), summarising relationships and statistical tests.

Besides short presentations on specific topics, you will work on your own, at your pace, through a sequence of guided exercises. We will be around to provide guidance, further explanations and help in case of difficulties. The e-learning website of this workshop will remain available after the Summer School.

This workshop will primarily be held on-line. If requested (sanitary conditions permitting) you may also attend on-site.

Prerequisites
You should have some minimal background - even rusty - in statistics and data analysis.
