Journalism in Europe: why we need an "Alliance for Enlightenment"

Stephan Russ-Mohl, full professor of Journalism and Media Management at USI and head of the European Journalism Observatory (2002-2018) will give his farewell lecture on Tuesday, May 28, at 6 pm at the USI Lugano campus nell aula A11.

Journalism in Europe is as diverse as Europe itself. A few days after the EU elections may be an appropriate moment at which to reflect on the role played by media and journalism in Brussels and the European Union, and how important it is to pay attention to their activities.

The lecture – in English – will reflect both on the past and the future. It will look back to some insights provided by the European Journalism Observatory (EJO), a project which began in 2004 as a platform in three languages based at USI and has since grown into a network of prestigious participating research institutions from 15 countries and language areas. It will also look ahead, exploring ways in which researchers and journalists might cooperate more closely in the fight against disinformation and fake news, and what other European countries and the EU might learn from Switzerland. It will be followed by a reception.

Stephan Russ-Mohl

Stephan Russ-Mohl has been, from 2012 to 2018, full Professor of Journalism and Media Management at the Faculty of Communication Sciences, Università della Svizzera italiana, Lugano and Director of the European Journalism Observatory (www.ejo.ch). Born in 1950 in Frankfurt/Main, Germany, he studied Social Sciences and Public Administration/Public Policy at the University of Konstanz and at Princeton University and completed his professional training in Journalism at the Deutsche Journalistenschule (German School of Journalism), Munich. He was Professor of Journalism and Media Management at the Institut für Publizistik und Kommunikationswissenschaften, Freie Universität Berlin, from 1985 to 2001. He was a Visiting Fellow at the University of Wisconsin (Madison) in 1989, at the European University Institute (Florence) in 1992, and at the Department of Communication, Stanford University in 1995, 1999, 2008, and 2015. He was Gutenberg Fellow at the “Research Focus Media Convergence” of the University of Mainz 2011/2012.
