Ranking time is here. A few weeks after the news of the successful placement of USI in the 'Young University Rankings' of Times Higher Education, it is now the turn of the coveted 'QS Top 50 Under 50' by Quacquarelli Symonds. USI ranks 26th worldwide among universities under 50 years of age.
The rankings of young universities under 50 are compiled from the same data as the overall ranking published on 10 June 2020 by Quacquarelli Symonds, in which USI was the highest-ranking new entrant. The QS World University rankings assess universities' performance across six indicators: academic reputation, employer reputation, research citations per faculty member, faculty/student ratio, the proportion of international students, and proportion of international faculty members.
According to USI Rector Boas Erez: "I find these results very compelling because these rankings focused on young universities in some ways correct a "distortion". It is, in fact, understandable that, on some fronts, younger universities cannot enjoy the same historical advantages as their competitors. Let's think about the concept of 'reputation', which is very prominent in the methodology of the flagship rankings, and that is assessed among students and their peers in scientific research. I believe that reputation is something that is built progressively over time. Over the course of decades - even centuries for the oldest universities - universities build bonds of trust with their communities of reference, which become stronger from generation to generation. USI is on the right track, despite what (for a university) is considered a young age: just think that we will remain in this ranking "for young institutions" for another 25 years".
