Pinocchio is the star of the new series made in ISI

After tackling two of the most fundamental works of Italian literature and civilisation such as Dante's Commedia and Manzoni's The Betrothed, the series of readings organised by USI Institute of Italian Studies offer students and the public the irresistible story of a common piece of wood, "from a woodpile", to a "marvellous puppet", whose adventures will fascinate readers all over the world, becoming the second most translated book of literature after Saint-Exupéry's Little Prince. The opening reading will be held on Wednesday, 21 October at 6:30 pm in the auditorium of the West Campus, Lugano, Via Buffi. Readings will carry on every Wednesday until 9 December.

The adventures of Pinocchio by Carlo Lorenzini, aka Collodi, are a completely atypical classic, the result of a miraculous balance in which many literary genres and styles of writing blend together. Although it is offered in the retired role of the pedagogical book for children, it is a work that actually succeeds in admirably blending more traditions: that of fable, that of popular theatre, of high literature - from Dante to Ariosto to Manzoni himself -, including the Sacred Scriptures. Pinocchio has in itself an intimately mercurial nature: this puppet is impregnable and always on the run, reluctant to any pedagogy, as well as elusive with respect to any classification is the book that tells the story, fantastic yet at the same time extremely "realistic" in representing the poverty of the Tuscan countryside and its people.

The readings proposed in this first cycle will try to highlight the richness and versatility of this extraordinary book, also making use of the contribution of eminent scholars of Collodi, with particular attention to its literary models.
