The Water Relay kicked off from Turin on 20 September. The event foreshadows the 2021 Winter Universiade, which will take place from 11 to 21 December 2021. A unique Olympic "Torch" will cross the Swiss universities to complete its journey on 11 December in Lucerne. The race will include a stop in Ticino on Friday, 8 October.

The Water Relay will be decidedly out of the ordinary because water will be carried this year instead of the classic flaming Torch. Water is an essential feature of the 2021 Winter Universiade, so a new Water Relay has replaced the traditional Torch Relay.

The Sport Service has taken on the task of organising a leg of the relay. On Friday, 8 October, a team consisting of students and sports instructors will leave Mendrisio campus by bicycle and hand over the baton to a group of canoeists at the Riva San Vitale lido, who will paddle to Maroggia, where a change of "means of transport" will take place, passing from the canoe to the SUP from Maroggia to the Melide dam bridge.
After that, there will be a change from SUP to a sailboat that will carry the "water" to Lugano. Finally, the last stretch will be on inline skates from the "Foce" to the Plaza of the East Campus.
