A signing ceremony of the Memorandum of Understanding-MOU between the University President Kasa-Vubu (UKV) of Boma, Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Università della Svizzera italiana (USI) was held on Monday, 31 October. The Rector Prof. Darius Bamuene representing UKV and USI Deputy Rector Prof. Lorenzo Cantoni attended the signing. This agreement, the first of its kind for the Faculty of Biomedical Sciences, is the result of a long preparatory work in collaboration with the International Relations and Study Abroad Service.

"As a faculty of medicine, we are delighted with this initiative, which opens the door to future collaboration with the university and the hospital in Boma. After the leave of doctors from Kinshasa, the Faculty of Medicine was closed, and as a result, the already precarious health care offer, was severely affected. They now need a helping hand to get back on their feet, and maybe the help could come from our doctors working in Ticino and close to the Faculty of Biomedical Sciences. Indeed there is a lot of work to be done and a need for planning, but this first step could be the beginning of a beautiful adventure." With these words, Professor Giovanni Pedrazzini, Dean of the Faculty of Biomedical Sciences at USI, stresses the importance of the agreement.

Rector Bamuene thanks USI authorities for signing this agreement that "will surely help University President Joseph Kasa-Vubu to fulfil its three missions: teaching, research, serving the community."
