According to a report by Movetia, during its meeting on 6 November 2024, the Federal Council made several decisions that could envisage Switzerland's association with the Erasmus+ programme starting in 2027. The next step is for Parliament to take a stand and approve the necessary funding.

Movetia states in its communication, "We are delighted with this decision, as it provides a clearer and more concrete perspective on Switzerland's association with the Erasmus+ programme." The two-year notice period will give the national agency and the educational institutions involved time to prepare in case Switzerland officially joins the programme.

To participate in Erasmus+, the national agency must demonstrate that it meets the management and quality criteria required for agencies in member states of the programme. Furthermore, it will be essential to raise awareness among education officials at all levels, including compulsory schooling, universities, vocational training, extracurricular youth activities (including sports), and adult education, as the Erasmus+ programmes encompass all these areas.

Erasmus+, which has a budget of more than EUR 26 billion, is the largest educational programme promoting mobility in Europe and beyond. Currently, 33 countries participate in it. For Switzerland, joining it would mean having access to numerous offers, advantages and resources.
