Cybercrime and mafias: an event at USI to explore new digital threats
Institutional Communication Service
6 February 2025
On Wednesday, 26 February, USI will host an on the use of technology by criminal organisations. Starting from the book Mafiadigitale.ch, written by Francesco Lepori, three experts will examine Switzerland's role in this context during a conference organised by the Ticino Observatory on Organised Crime (O-TiCO)
Italian mafias have successfully adapted to the digital world, utilising encrypted communication and engaging in money laundering through cryptocurrencies to expand and conceal their activities. The increasingly close relationship between organised crime and cyberspace will be the focus of a conference scheduled for Wednesday, 26 February 2025 at 6 pm in room A11 (Red Building, USI West Campus Lugano).
The conference will feature Annamaria Astrologo, professor at USI and head of academics of O-TiCO, Francesco Lepori, RSI journalist and O-TiCO's Operations Manager, and Nicolas Tagliabue, researcher at SUPSI's forensic informatics service. The speakers will discuss how Italian criminal organisations utilise new technologies, focusing specifically on the use of cryptophones, social media, and clandestine financial tools.
The event takes its cue from the book Mafiadigitale.ch, authored by Francesco Lepori and published by Armando Dadò Editore. This book compiles years of research and investigation into mafia activities, highlighting Switzerland's involvement in these strategies. It reveals the extent to which the country has been implicated through transnational investigations and operations that expose its connections to mafia activities.
The encounter is an opportunity to explore a highly topical issue through dialogue among experts in organised crime, investigative journalism, and cybersecurity.
Complimentary cocktails and refreshments will be served at the end of the event. Registration via this link is welcome.
