A multidisciplinary background and varied experience can pave the way for the development of skills that are needed to deal with a rapidly changing working landscape. This was the takeaway message of the event Beyond the algorithm: assessing the risks and value of AI implementation in enterprise settings that took place on 25 February at West Campus at Università della Svizzera italiana (USI), in Lugano, promoted within the Master in European Studies in Investor Relations and Financial Communication (ESIR) in collaboration with USI Career and Alumni Service.
In a "strategic conversation" format, Dr Carlo Torniai (Group Chief Data and Analytics Officer, Angelini Industries) engaged in a discussion with Professor Lonneke van der Plas (Associate Professor of Natural Language Processing at USI). They talked about the benefits and risks of Artificial Intelligence (AI), and their consequences for today’s job market.
The discussion about AI led to an engaging debate among participants and speakers. Key points included the importance of adapting to different contexts and developing alternative solutions, the relevance of communication and critical thinking skills, and the value of curiosity and a willingness to acquire new knowledge.
