Established in 1818, the Museu Nacional do Rio de Janeiro was Brazil's first and oldest scientific institution and a significant repository of cultural heritage, housing thousands of artifacts from both Portuguese and Brazilian origins as well as other international sources. The catastrophic fire on September 2, 2018, precisely 200 years after its establishment, led to the near-total destruction of the museum, prompting a critical examination of the impacts of negligence on heritage preservation.
Luiz Carlos Panhota Alves’s study delves into the cultural significance of the museum and its critical role in shaping Brazilian identity and memory. It illustrates how the museum’s representation of national identity influenced societal perspectives and collective memory, particularly following the devastation of the fire. The restoration process is analyzed for its alignment with contemporary cultural practices and its role in reinforcing resilience within Brazilian society, highlighting how the reconstruction serves as a symbol of hope and revitalization. Additionally, it addresses the societal and institutional responses to the fire, focusing on the collective effort to restore and reimagine the institution as a beacon of national pride.
