Institutional Communication Service

14 April 2025

On 3 April 2025 the CoPeC project (Building care pathways for dementia: an integrated and participatory approach to preserve autonomy) was presented at the Alzheimer's Forum at Palazzo dei Congressi in Lugano. This event brought together over 400 industry professionals. This year's theme, "Dignity in dementia: a path to share and maintain over time", provided the ideal context to illustrate the objectives of CoPeC. The initiative aims to develop and promote integrated and personalised care pathways in the Ticino and Moesano areas.

The CoPeC project aims to develop, formalise and effectively communicate care pathways that promote the early detection of cognitive disorders and slow down the progression towards dementia, preserving the autonomy of the people involved as much as possible. The approach is participatory, directly involving social and health workers, family caregivers, and institutions that support and care for individuals with dementia. A central element of CoPeC is enhancing existing resources in the community, which are often underutilised, by improving the connection and integration between various services and activities within the care network.

Numerous local organisations are collaborating on the project together with the Institute of Public Health (IPH): ADiCASI, Pro Senectute Ticino and Moesano, Alzheimer Ticino, GincoTicino, the Office for the Elderly and Home Care, the Office of the Cantonal Physician, the Institute of Clinical Neuroscience of Southern Switzerland - Memory Clinic and the Home Care Association of Mendrisiotto and Basso Ceresio (ACD). The project is supported by Promozione Salute Svizzera.

During the morning, Dr Maddalena Fiordelli (responsible for the project for USI) and Dr Rebecca Amati (project manager) of the IPH presented CoPeC, illustrating its objectives, aims and methodology. Two workshops took place in the afternoon, each attended by over 60 participants. The goal was to begin mapping the services currently available in the Ticino and Moesano areas across the five distinct phases of the treatment process. The workshops also aimed to foster a discussion about what is still lacking and what improvements can be made.
