One year after the planting initiative held as part of “BiodiverCittà” USI-SUPSI, the flowerbed outside the East Campus in Viganello has grown into a small yet flourishing example of urban biodiversity.

The herbaceous and aromatic plants, planted with the support of citizens, staff, and students at the conclusion of the “BiodiverCittà” USI-SUPSI event series, have taken root and blossomed, transforming a simple green space along Via la Santa into a vibrant and welcoming habitat.

Abundant spring rains and favorable weather conditions have fostered the growth of various species, offering further proof of nature’s resilience and vitality even in urban settings. Today, the meadow is home to various species, including poppies, cosmos, and marigolds, which not only add vibrant colors to the urban landscape, but also attract numerous pollinating insects, birds, and small animals. Bees, butterflies, and beetles have already found shelter in this area, enriching the diversity and complexity of the urban ecosystem.

The East Campus flowerbed stands as a concrete example of how urban spaces can be reimagined to promote biodiversity, thanks to the shared commitment of institutions and the community.
