This workshop aims to study the factors that have a positive impact on mountain agriculture from historical and contemporary perspectives. Where possible, we will compare historical and contemporary solutions that support farmers.
Historically, the shared management of certain resources, such as forests, mountain pastures, irrigation channels and dairies, was widespread and helped to address specific problems faced by mountain farmers, such as seasonal transhumance. What is the situation today? Do these dynamics still exist? Similarly, historical sources show that family and village solidarity were important for getting through busy periods in the agricultural calendar, such as haymaking. How do today's farmers manage these periods, given that the majority of the population no longer works in agriculture? Finally, we will examine the role that policies supporting farmers have played, and continue to play, in this context.
