USI commemorates Mimmo Jodice
Academy of Architecture
29 October 2025
The Academy of Architecture and the Università della Svizzera italiana express their deepest condolences on the passing of Mimmo Jodice, master of Italian photography and leading figure on the international art scene.
His work combined formal rigour with poetic intensity, investigating the transformations of the contemporary city, the signs of time and the dialogue between memory and modernity with a sharp and sensitive eye. From his metaphysical visions of Naples to his reflections on the contemporary urban landscape and the antique, Jodice restored the value of thought and emotion to photography, making it an instrument of knowledge and beauty.
In 2013, the Academy of Architecture dedicated a monographic exhibition to him, entitled “Città sublimi”, testifying to the deep connection between his work and architectural reflection. Later in 2013, the Università della Svizzera italiana awarded him a Doctorate honoris causa in recognition of his extraordinary contribution to contemporary visual culture.
Mimmo Jodice also enjoyed relationships of esteem and friendship with various members of the academic community in Mendrisio, who remember his intelligence, kindness and profound humanity and therefore express their sympathy to the Jodice family.
His work has inspired and will continue to inspire generations of photographers, architects and scholars, as a lasting testimony to a vision capable of capturing the poetry of reality.
