The 26 signatory institutions of the Swiss Transparency Agreement on Animal Research (STAAR), comprising universities, research funding organisations, and professional associations, have released the 2024 Annual Report. This report details the initiatives implemented to enhance transparency and encourage dialogue regarding the responsible use of animals in research.

In 2024, all member institutions carried out activities related to the transparency commitments set out in STAAR. Twelve opened their animal facilities to groups of visitors – including school classes, journalists and political representatives – offering the public a direct insight into research conditions and good practices. Eleven institutions also organised conferences, symposiums and other outreach events. At the same time, many enhanced their digital communication across multiple channels, a sign that transparency in animal experimentation is becoming increasingly integral to institutional culture. The report emphasised USI's innovative use of an interactive screen featuring content on the 3Rs during the Universo Open Day.

One of the primary objectives for 2024 is to publish detailed data and figures. Twelve out of the fourteen institutions conducting animal experiments have made available specific information regarding the number and species of animals used. Additionally, several institutions have shared data on the severity of the procedures involved. Research support organisations have also contributed by providing information about funded projects.

The report also highlights a strong commitment to the 3Rs principle – Replacement, Reduction, Refinement – through public conferences, training courses and awards dedicated to good animal welfare practices.

Launched in 2022 and coordinated by swissuniversities, the STAAR project aims to foster a culture of openness, dialogue, and trust between research institutions and society. The current leading partner is École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), and USI has been part of the project since the consortium's foundation.
