On International Day of Women and Girls in Science, the inaugural event of the non-profit association GO WINneRS – Women in Research, Gynaecology & Obstetrics, supported by Ente Ospedaliero Cantonale, Università della Svizzera italiana (USI) and other national and international solidarity associations, was held at Ospedale Regionale di Lugano.

The initiative of the Association—comprising female physicians, researchers, and patients—was conceived and promoted by Prof. Maria Luisa Gasparri, EOC Head of Service, gynaecologist, senologist, and Head of the Clinical Research Unit (LRU) of the EOC Department of Gynaecology. It was established with a clear objective: to raise awareness for research, stimulate curiosity toward future challenges, and bring researchers and patients closer together through an inclusive, multidisciplinary, and innovative vision.

At the heart of the evening, with over 200 participants, was the message of a change in perspective that is transforming how science is done in the clinical setting: actively involving patients not only in the treatment process but also in the design of research projects.

Giving voice to experience

Involving patients means offering them the opportunity to recount their experiences, valuing their personal stories and contributing concretely to the definition of research questions. This is not a symbolic role but real participation that guides researchers toward clinical studies increasingly relevant and useful in everyday practice.

When those living with the disease contribute to defining priorities, methods and objectives, studies change: they become more realistic, more sensitive to quality of life, and better able to respond to people's concrete needs.

Research, innovation and awareness

The evening offered opportunities for reflection on the challenges of the future, innovation, and progress, with nationally and internationally renowned speakers addressing these issues from different perspectives.

Above all, one fundamental principle emerged: everything that women – and others – have the right to know and can do, for themselves and for others, also depends on greater awareness and participation in research.
