A key figure in the birth and development of the University, in his role as Head of the Division of University Affairs for the Canton, Mauro Martinoni witnessed the USI project at every stage, guiding it with unwavering dedication and astute wisdom through to its most recent developments. He was among those with the vision to imagine, build, and consolidate our institution, becoming one of its true founding figures. His work, often conducted behind the scenes, was instrumental in transforming ambitious ideas into reality.
Beyond his extraordinary professional contributions, Mauro leaves behind the memory of a man of great humanity, characterised by his willingness to listen and his generosity in sharing ideas. His keen intelligence was matched by a rare sensitivity and a subtle wit, while his professional commitment was always rooted in a profound care for others. Many in the USI community hold personal anecdotes and reflections about Mauro that they will cherish for years to come.
It is for these reasons that USI remembers him with deepest gratitude. During the upcoming Dies academicus on 25 April, the University will bestow upon him—regrettably in memoriam—the title of Honorary Member. This honour had already been approved by the Rectorate and ratified by the University Council in recent months; it now assumes even greater significance as a lasting mark of recognition for his fundamental role in the foundation and growth of this University.
USI extends its most sincere condolences to his family, especially his wife and children.
