Date: 5 May 2026 / 13:00 - 16:30
Seminarraum 01.004, Biozentrum, Spitalstrasse 41, 4056 Basel
This workshop provides a practical introduction to Swiss copyright law with a focus on music compositions and their use in research and academic contexts. It explores what aspects of a musical work are protected by copyright, including questions around melodies, harmonies, arrangements, and smaller musical elements.
A key part of the workshop addresses the use of works registered with SUISA. Participants will gain insight into which rights are managed through SUISA, what types of use are permitted, and when additional permissions may be required—particularly in research, teaching, and documentation settings.
The workshop also examines the conditions under which sheet music and other music-related materials may be published as Open Access. It discusses legal constraints, practical considerations, and possible strategies for making musical works accessible while respecting copyright.
The session is aimed at researchers working with musical materials, research support staff, composers, and anyone interested in understanding the legal framework surrounding the use and dissemination of music in Switzerland.
The workshop will be held by the CCdigitallaw team of the Università della Svizzera italiana within the OASAM (Open Access Strategies for Arts and Music) project funded by swissuniversities. It will be held in English and is open to everyone.
