Does Salzburg have a future in which it does not turn into a museum of its own past? Can the city address the challenges facing society today, will it be able to adapt to changing circumstances, and renew itself? In cooperation with the Accademia di architettura of the Università della Svizzera italiana (USI), the Museum der Moderne Salzburg has launched a project to address these questions. This exhibition presents the results, a selection of them are introduced in depth by scale models and architecture drawings.

Surrounded by unique natural sceneries and boasting a landmarked old town, Salzburg is recognized all over the world as a city of singular beauty. For the development and modernization of the city this special situation has frequently posed considerable challenges for political decision-makers, urban planners, and residents. The exhibition New Salzburg is designed to inspire debate on (new) urban planning with a critical view to the future of the UNESCO World Heritage–protected city.

In collaboration with the architecture faculty at the university in the Italian speaking region of Switzerland in Mendrisio visionary projects were developed illustrating how contemporary architecture can change a city’s complexion in innovative ways. 122 students working under the guidance of fifteen internationally renowned architects and teachers designed thesis projects that explore potential avenues for future urban development in Salzburg. Fourteen sites were selected in cooperation with the city of Salzburg, and a combination of several sites reduced the final number to fourteen:

Augustinerbräu parking lot, Mirabellplatz, AVA-Hof building, northern Kapuzinerberg, Museum der Moderne Salzburg, Mönchsberg, Residenzplatz, Auerspergstraße, Möbi (Fürbergstraße), railway station, Harmath & Weilinger, Nonntal—Dr.-Franz-Rehrl-Platz, trade fair site, and former checkpoint at Freilassing.

The leading teachers are Manuel Aires Mateus (Aires Mateus e Associados) and Francisco Aires Mateus (Francisco Aires Mateus Arquitectos), Walter Angonese, Michele Arnaboldi, Valentin Bearth (Bearth & Deplazes Architekten), Martin Boesch (E. & M. Boesch Architekten), Frédéric Bonnet (Obras—architecture / espace public / urbanisme / paysage), Mario Botta, Jan De Vylder (Architecten De Vylder Vinck Taillieu), Yvonne Farrell and Shelley McNamara (Grafton Architects), Quintus Miller (Miller & Maranta), João Nunes (PROAP—Estudos e Projectos de Arquitectura Paisagista) and João Gomes da Silva (Global, Arquitectura Paisagista), Valerio Olgiati, and Jonathan Sergison (Sergison Bates architects).

In collaboration with the City of Salzburg and Initiative Architektur, the Museum der Moderne Salzburg has put together a program of lectures, city walks, and discussion forums in conjunction with the exhibition. These events invite the public to become actively involved in a wide-ranging reflection on the urban future of Salzburg.
