Celebrating the International Women and Girls in Science Day at USI Faculty of Informatics

On February 16, 2018, several proud computer scientists — the women and girls in the Faculty of Informatics at USI — gathered at the USI Lugano campus to celebrate the UN International Day of Women and Girls in Science. The event was organised by Prof. Laura Pozzi and her Ph.D student Ilaria Scarabattolo, and involved students enrolled in the Bachelor, Master and Ph.D programmes in Informatics, as well as faculty members — among which Prof. Silvia Santini and Prof. Evanthia Papadopoulou.
The purpose of the gathering was for the women and girls to exchange views and discuss their respective academic experiences. “The meeting was absolutely informal”, Prof. Pozzi points out, "we wanted to highlight the role and importance of female students and faculty in a field of study where male figures are currently more common”. Although at the USI Faculty of Informatics only 19% of its members are women, “during the discussions it emerged that being a minority does not seem to be an issue”, says Prof. Pozzi, who adds that “in the field of technical sciences, the gender issue is perhaps less relevant because, after all, substance tends to prevail over form”.
