A group of 9 high school students from the three main cultural regions of Switzerland spent a week at the USI Lugano campus, from September 10 to 15, to take part in the study week called “Fascinating Informatics”. Under the supervision of faculty and researchers of the USI Faculty of Informatics, the students had the opportunity to spend six days developing computer projects and programming applications, including visual programming of microcontrollers, image processing with Liquid.js, and 3D simulation of celestial bodies. The young participants were able to experience how varied, versatile, innovative and fascinating the current information technologies are.

The initiative of the ‘Schweizer Jugend Forscht” (www.sjf.ch) aims at fostering a deeper knowledge and understanding of informatics by encouraging future generations to consider pursuing their education paths in this increasingly pervasive and infrastructural field of today’s society. USI participates in the event since 2008.

The national finals of the study week, which in 2017 were held at the Lugano campus, took place on Saturday 15 in Zurich, at the headquarters of PwC Switzerland. In addition to the young participants who presented their projects, representatives of USI, University of Berne, FHNW University of Applied Sciences and Arts Northwestern Switzerland, and of PwC Switzerlnd attended the event.
