The MEM Summer Summit goes to Rome for Bites of Transfoodmation in Rome. The event is organised by the Permanent Representation of Switzerland to FAO, IFAD and WFP, in partnership with Istituto Svizzero, Swiss Embassy in Rome, Présence Suisse and Università della Svizzera Italiana (USI). The event aims to lay the foundations for momentous changes in the global food systems.

Federica Frediani and the MEM team have contributed to shaping and organising the event and will be present in Rome. Accompanied by a group of MEM Alumni, they will be taking part as facilitators, speakers and moderators. USI’S Rector, professor Boas Erez, will deliver the closing address at the Dispute with Swiss Ambassador in Rome, Rita Adam.

The Global Sustainable Development Report 2019, entitled The Future is Now – Science for Achieving Sustainable Development, highlights the need to build more sustainable food systems and healthy nutrition patterns for the future. In this context, the United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres, launched the Food Systems Summit 2021, a People’s Summit, calling for the collective action of all citizens to radically change the way we produce, process and consume food.

Switzerland wishes to play an active role in this transformative process of change. It, therefore, organises Bites of Transfoodmation, an event that brings together a unique blend of young, motivated individuals ready to think and reshape the future of food systems.

The event is composed of two parts:

  • a two-day retreat at I Casali del Pino where a group of young innovators will look for common denominators to elaborate a shared vision of the future of food systems. They will start to discuss the following vision of the future: a fully urbanized and globally interconnected world, affected by climate change, where food is fundamental for health and culture.
  • a one-day dispute where the young innovators will present their visions along with selected participants and experts at Istituto Svizzero, following the Swiss tradition of confronting diverse ideas.

A closing event will be held in Spring 2021 at I Casali del Pino, open to a selected audience, where the results of the whole process will be publicly presented.

Speakers: in addition to the innovators and young change-makers presentations, there will be interventions by leading personalities such as David Nabarro, Strategic Director 4SD Switzerland and Special Envoy of the WHO for COVID19; Gilbert F. Houngbo, president of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD); Christian Frutiger, Assistant Director-General and Head of Global Cooperation at the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC); Giorgio Marrapodi, Director General for Development Cooperation – Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Pio Wennubst, Ambassador at the Permanent Mission of Switzerland to FAO/IFAD/WFP; Sara Roversi, Founder of the Future Food Institute, and President of the Future Food Network.
