In Italian, please! For a balanced use of Italian and English in academia

Institutional Communication Service

Date: 9 September 2022 / 18:30

The cumbersome presence of English in university curricula certainly generates more than one problem. Above all, and in perspective, a depletion of the vocabulary and scientific literacy of the other national languages, which are concretely deprived of an autonomous vocabulary and perhaps some of the ability to reason at a high academic level. English thus ends up becoming a qualifying skill in itself, sometimes even to the detriment of the scientific level: those who know the language of the empire enjoy, in other words, an often unjustified scientific privilege. This will be discussed on Friday, 9 September 2022, at 6:15 pm, in the conference room of Palazzo Morettini in Locarno.

Speakers will be Alessio Petralli, linguist, director of the Möbius Foundation Lugano; Marco Cerase, Councillor of the Chamber of Deputies of the Italian Republic and author of In Italian, Please! Istigazione all'uso della nostra lingua all'università (Rome, Armando editore, 2019); Monica Duca Widmer, chemical engineer and president of Università della Svizzera italiana.

Attached is the flyer of the event, which will be held in Italian.
